Vision Quest

Chris Sharma on Vision Quest, deep water soloing, and the search for new inspiration

June 2026

Chris Sharma has been visiting Mallorca and developing lines since 2003, and over time, his name has become synonymous with deep water soloing. Finding unique new lines, imagining new possibilities, and pushing the limits of what can be climbed has become an art form for Chris. Developing is his craft.

The king lines he’s established across every side of the island trace the passage of time, each one tied to a different moment, a different source of inspiration, and a new adventure. For Chris, these climbs are more than physical achievements. They’re a way to reconnect with joy, freedom, and intensity.

“Climbing is my baseline. It’s where I feel like myself. It’s my power spot. I go to charge my batteries.”

“Climbing is my baseline. It’s where I feel like myself. It’s my power spot. I go to charge my batteries.”

Chris first spotted Vision Quest in 2022. From below, he saw a line of tufas and wondered if it might be possible. He rappelled in and returned over several trips, piecing together whether the climb could actually go. As the vision began to take shape, his excitement grew stronger, channeling all of his energy into a single objective.

“There were barely enough holds to make it possible, but I felt like I had to climb it,” he says. “I’d been working my whole life toward something like that.”

For Chris, progression isn’t only about climbing harder. It’s about continuing to find inspiration, new places, new styles, and new experiences that keep the sense of discovery alive.

After a recent trip to Portugal, he’s already thinking about the next potential deep water solo project. The excitement of imagining what might be possible is still what drives him most.

“The key to climbing is staying inspired. That’s how I’ve been able to keep doing this for so many years.”

Whether it’s a new line, a new landscape, or simply a different style of movement, Chris continues searching for experiences that feel unique, climbs that reignite the same curiosity and motivation that first drew him to the rock.

“The key to climbing is staying inspired. That’s how I’ve been able to keep doing this for so many years.”
